Appy days! Facebook finally launches iPad app

EIGHTEEN months late and following months of speculation, Facebook has finally boarded Apple’s tablet revolution with its first iPad app.

The free download, released to the Australian App Store this morning, delivers full-screen features for the first time and greater functionality, though its slick new menus hide some quirks.

Facebook software engineer Leon Dubinsky stated the world’s richest social network developed the app to deliver “the full Facebook experience, right at your fingertips”.

That experience includes some of Facebook’s most recent additions that appear crowded on a website but make sense on a tablet.

The updated News Feed delivers recent and popular updates, while a persistent Notifications bar keeps users across updates and new messages.

A toolbar has also been added to this iPad app to let users check in with Facebook Places and upload pics directly from their iPad.

Two new features steal the show, however. A slide-out menu offers quick access to everything from friends to events and groups to games.

It seems to borrow its appearance from the official Twitter iPad app.

The Facebook app’s second headline feature is the way it handles photos, filing albums all into virtual pic piles that can be opened, flicked through or even enlarged with a pinch.

Ironically, showing off pics using this Facebook app will make them easier to share with people who do not use the service.

This fresh app still has quirks and is missing a couple of items.

Conversations in Facebook Chat are replicated in the Messages tab, the newly added Ticker is missing, and even though you can add photos, you can’t perform basic pic editing, such as rotating them.

It’s also genuinely surprising that this app has taken so long to develop, though it is useful and a certain hit.
