Streampix not just about Netflix

NBC’s “30 Rock” is among the shows that will be available for streaming via Comcast’s new Xfinity Streampix subscription service. Comcast’s new subscription VOD service may seem to be all about countering Netflix, but the nation’s largest cable operator actually has different competition in its sights. Xfinity Streampix will launch Thursday with movies and TV content from past seasons licensed from its own programming unit, NBCUniversal, as well as Disney, Warner Bros., and Sony Pictures.

This year, “The King’s Speech” tallied $115.9 million of its remarkable $138.8 million domestic total, which repped 42% of TWC’s entire year-to-date tally. eOne nabs Vivendi vid biz in Canada

LONDON — eOne has taken over Vivendi Entertainment’s home entertainment biz in Canada. The acquisition, effective from Jan. 1, will see eOne’s market share in the retail sector significantly increased by Vivendi’s library giving the distrib rights to a raft of docu and special interest genre titles. Under the deal, eOne will become the exclusive distributor in Canada for key home entertainment distribution labels, including Navarre, Funimation, Shout!, Factory, Classic Media, Mill Creek and National Geographic.

Sony reports $346 mil loss

TOKYO — Sony reported a $346 million year-on-year net loss for the second quarter of fiscal 2011, blaming the red ink on slumping TV sales and the rising value of the yen against major currencies.
