CMA Awards: A grand ole show

The 45th Country Music Association Awards have turned into one of the most dependably pleasing awards shows of any sort on television. Wednesday night’s host-combination of Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood have become a comfortable comedy team. When they began the evening with jokes about Hank Williams, Jr.’s perceived Obama/Hitler comparison — the Fox News appearance that got him punted out of prime-time football — and Hank himself joined them onstage, the trio got a standing ovation of hearty laughs.

Brett Ratner exits Oscars gig

Dogged by growing controversy over his use of an anti-gay slur after a screening of his movie Tower Heist and boorish comments he made about his sex life on The Howard Stern Show, Brett Ratner has stepped down as the producer of this year’s Oscars telecast. “He did the right thing for the Academy and for himself,” Sherak stated in a statement. “Words have meaning, and they have consequences.

‘SNL’: How’d Charlie Day do?

Who’s the wild card now, Charlie?! Returning from a three-week hiatus, Saturday Night Live is all new tonight with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day as host and Maroon 5 (and their reluctantly shirtless lead singer Adam Levine) as musical guests. Day’s first go as an SNL host couldn’t be coming at a better time, really. Before the break, the back-to-back Ben Stiller and Anna Faris episodes felt lackluster at ideal (Melissa McCarthy set the bar painstakingly high), ...

Ryan Reynolds on ‘Family Guy’!

Many people are obsessed with Peter Griffin, but did you know that list includes… Ryan Reynolds? In Sunday’s episode of Family Guy, the rather fit actor (who is developing his own animated series for Fox) shacks up in Quahog to shoot a motion picture and immediately finds himself starry-eyed over Peter. Eager for a tiny preview of Reynolds’ guest spot? Look no farther than below, where you can see Reynolds roll into town and begin charming Peter.  (Sorry, Lois.) ‘Family ...

‘Paranormal 3′ rocks box office

Image Credit: Paramount Pictures Well, that worked. Produced for only $5 million, Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 3 surpassed everyone’s expectations and opened to a staggering $54 million, according to studio estimates. That’s the biggest October debut ever, beating the $50.4 million opening of last year’s equally scary Jackass 3-D. Paramount is also claiming that PA3 clinched the ideal horror opening ever, topping Paranormal Activity 2‘s $40.7 million.

‘Paranormal Activity 3′ opens big

Looks like a tiny scare was just what Hollywood needed. After two months of tepid box-office results, the horror flick Paranormal Activity 3 shook things up with a monster $26.2 million on Friday, according to early estimates. That’s the strongest opening-day gross since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 debuted way back in July. This is unquestionably a front-loaded result for the R-rated horror prequel, especially considering that the film’s Friday figure includes the $8 million it ...

‘Charlie’s Angels’ canceled

Image Credit: Bob D’Amico/ABC Some classics — even the cheesiest ones — are better left in the past, and Charlie’s Angels, it seems, is no exception: ABC is shutting down production the reboot from Smallville scribes Al Gough and Miles Millar. A network representative states the show will continue to air on Thursdays, filling the 8 p.m. slot with an unknown number of episodes (four of the show’s eight shot episodes have aired).

‘SNL’: How’d Ben Stiller do?

No pressure on Ben Stiller, but there are some awfully high expectations going into tonight’s Saturday Night Live, which he’ll be hosting for just the second time in his career. Not only is he entering into a season that is two-for-two with stellar hosts (first with record-breaker Alec Baldwin and then with first-timer Melissa McCarthy), but there’s also been speak that his Tower Heist co-star Eddie Murphy could stop by Studio 8H.
