Classic Ad: A Little Extra From Esso

March 19, 2011, 7:00 amBy ROBERT PEELE

This week’s classic ad, for Esso Extra fuel, goes all the way back to the 1930s — the days when the butcher, the baker and the gasoline maker all took pride in their work, and didn’t mind throwing in a tiny something extra for their customers.

Esso (or “S-O,” for Standard Oil) was the brand name for gas sold by Jersey Standard, one of the companies created after Standard Oil was broken up in 1911. Jersey Standard changed its name to Exxon in 1972, long after the demise of the singing gas station attendant.

Extra is exactly what some present-day consumers don’t want in their gasoline, at least when it comes to ethanol. In this Sunday’s Automobiles section, Tudor Van Hampton examines the debate on ethanol-based fuels, which some vintage automobile restorers — as well as many owners of motorcycles, recreational vehicles and motorized lawn equipment — state contribute to the decay of engine parts, poor performance and breakdowns.
