“It’s great to welcome Rashad back to the Eskimos,” general manager Eric Tillman stated Monday in a release. “He left as a champion after the 2005 Grey Cup and he is eager to help us return to that elite level.

“In our conversations we talked about how much winning two championships in Edmonton meant to him, and about his deep gratitude to [assistant GM] Paul Jones who brought him to the CFL as a 19-year-old kid back in 2003.”

Jeanty posted eight sacks in the 2005 season. The Miami native spent four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and led the team with 14 special-teams tackles in 2009.

However, Jeanty broke his leg on the opening kickoff of the AFC wildcard game against the New York Jets and missed the entire 2010 season.

Jeanty later signed with the Philadelphia Eagles but was released prior to the begin of the 2011 season.

A TEAM of Russian scientists successfully drilled down to an “alien” lake deep below the ice in Antarctica that was hidden for an estimated 20 million years, the Ria Novosti news bureau reported today.

“Yesterday, our scientists stopped drilling at the depth of 3768m and reached the surface of the sub-glacial lake,” the report quoted an unnamed scientific source as saying.

Scientists hope Lake Vostok could reveal new forms of life, and teams from the US and the UK also are drilling down to other hidden lakes on frozen continent.

The Russian team had not been heard from for more than a week, raising fears for its safety.

Temperatures were dropping below minus 40C, and the clock was ticking before the onset of the Antarctic winter, when the temperature will get twice as cold. Vostok Station boasts the lowest recorded temperature on Earth: minus 89.4C.

The Russian team was expected to bring water up through the hole and let it freeze over the winter. The following year, the team will be able to begin research on what they find, Dr John Priscu, professor of ecology at Montana State University, told FOXNews.com last week.

February 3, 2012, 7:15 pm By THE NEW YORK TIMES

In Sunday’s Automobiles section, Christopher Jensen reviews the Range Rover Evoque, a relatively lithe sport utility car from a marque traditionally associated with chunky, if plush, utility machines.

The Evoque is aimed at a style-conscious driver who wants access to the Range Rover mystique without the dear prices and profligate thirst of the company’s other vehicles. As Mr. Jensen writes:

The least costly four-door model is $43,995 and the least-expensive coupe is $1,000 more. That is about the same as a heavily optioned Land Rover LR2, previously the company’s cheapest model, and roughly $5,700 less than the most basic LR4.

The Evoque tries to be both a spirited pavement performer and a stout off-road ambler. Ultimately, Mr. Jensen finds that the S.U.V. splits the difference, which is no bad thing. Stuart Schorr, a brand spokesman, told him the Evoque could become the best-selling Range Rover in the United States, an altogether plausible outcome, Mr. Jensen writes:

Given the new model’s combination of chic style, all-around capability, relative affordability and more acceptable fuel economy, such a degree of popularity would not come as a surprise.

Read the entire review, check out the slide show and share your thoughts on the 2012 Evoque in the comments.

Darryl Sittler knows exactly how Sam Gagner felt.

“Everything falls into place,” he stated Friday in an interview with The Canadian Press. “Every shot you take pretty well goes in or you make a pass and the guy completes it — it’s magical those types of nights, they do not happen very often.”

Like many around the hockey world, Sittler was surprised to wake up and hear of Gagner’s eight-point performance in Edmonton’s 8-4 victory over Chicago on Thursday night.

The Oilers forward became just the 12th NHL player to record at least that many points in a game — and the first since Mario Lemieux last accomplished the feat Dec. 31, 1988.

Sittler, the former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, continues to hold the NHL record nearly 36 years after racking up six goals and four assists in a game against Boston. It remains an evening he still cannot really explain.

“I would never have thought that in my wildest dreams that I would be the one to score 10 points in a game, but it happened,” stated Sittler. “I’m sure Gagner probably never thought he had have eight.

“He’s been struggling a tiny bit this season — I do not know if he is had injuries or what it is — but he certainly put up the points last night.”

Gagner’s four goals and four assists came in the final 40 minutes of the game. After finishing the second period with three points, he scored the first of three third-period goals at 1:54. He would add two more assist as well.

Sensing what was happening, the fans at Rexall Place chanted “We want 10! We want 10!” — a nod to both a previous blowout win over Chicago and Sittler’s record.

Even though scoring in the sport has been greatly reduced since Sittler set his record in 1967, he is still a tiny surprised it hasn’t been challenged. No other NHL player has even reached nine points.

“It’s gone on for a long time,” stated Sittler. “I guess the fact that there were so many great players like Wayne [Gretzky] and Mario [Lemieux] and Sidney [Crosby] and [Alex] Ovechkin, and the number of years that passed. … I get asked about it all the time.”

The 51-year-old Sittler continues to do work in community relations for the Maple Leafs. He’s prepared for the possibility of one day seeing his record matched or surpassed.

“Those things are out of your control,” stated Sittler. “If somebody breaks it, that would be great. No different I guess when I tied and broke [Maurice] Rocket Richard’s record — a great Canadian hero and he scored it in the ’40s. I do not think anyone would have thought that somebody else was going to get eight [points] or six [goals] in a game, that sort of thing. And it happened.

“If it happens to somebody, I’d be happy for them. But hey, am I glad to hold the record and would like to continue holding it? Sure, definitely.”

One thing he refused to do is rule out the possibility of it happening.

“If the stars are aligned right and everything is working, it might happen some day,” stated Sittler. “I’m glad to have done it in a Leafs uniform and I’m proud to have held the record for as long as I have so far.”

Gagner did manage one entry into the Oilers record book. He tied the franchise mark for most points in a game, joining Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey.

Gagner’s name had been mentioned in trade rumours. In light of his large night would you … ?

The New York Giants and the New England Patriots face off February 5 in the NFL championship. The game, known as the Super Bowl, will be played in Indianapolis, Indiana and ends a season in which expressions of faith on the field by a player from another team ignited controversy.

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow played with Bible verse numbers painted under his eyes. After victories, he dropped down on one knee to pray and talked about his faith in the locker room.

“First and foremost, I just want to thank my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ,” Tebow often said.

The Broncos nearly made it to the Super Bowl but lost to the Patriots during the playoffs, despite a winning streak with Tebow as quarterback. But his displays of faith sparked a nation-wide controversy, with many football fans inspired by it and many others mocking it.

Most National Football League teams have spiritual advisers. George McGovern is the chaplain of the Super Bowl-bound New York Giants. McGovern stated he does not believe God takes sides in sports, but comprehends that people might attribute a divine hand to Tebow’s success.

“Here’s a man who took a losing team, and made it a winning team, even though he is not that good a quarterback,” noted McGovern.

Tebow is now a hero to fellow evangelical Christians who have promoted sports as a way of reviving Christian faith in American society.

Dan Britton is executive vice president of Ministry Programs at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. It runs thousands of summer camps and Bible study and prayer groups at schools and colleges across the country.

“We believe that if an athlete separates their faith and sports then actually their faith is not real,” Britton said.

Tebow is just the latest in a string of players going back to the 1970s to bring their faith onto the field. But the origins of evangelical Christians’ interest in football go back further.

Tony Ladd, director of athletics at Wheaton College, an evangelical school in Illinois, and co-author of the book, “Muscular Christianity,” states that in the late 19th century, evangelicals worried about declining religiosity among American men and found that sports provided a framework to reach them.

“So it became a generating kind of using muscular – using sport in other words – activity to both evangelize and bring those men into a culture of Christianity,” explained Ladd.

He states “Muscular Christianity” led to the creation of the Young Men’s Christian Association, or YMCA. In the United States, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes was founded in 1954 and preachers such as Billy Graham used famous sports figures to attract massive crowds.

“Football has always lent itself to this kind of appropriation or projection if you will, project your own values onto the game,” noted Michael Oriard, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1970s and is now a professor at Oregon State University.

He states that has only become more pronounced with ceremonies such as Air Force flyovers that connect the game with patriotic fervor.

The singer Madonna – who is known for her explorations of spirituality – will perform at halftime at the Super Bowl. She called it “the holy of holies in America.”

“Football is symbolically, theatrically, dramatically really powerful,” explained Oriard. “One of the things that is different between the football we play compared to the football that the rest of the world plays – that we call soccer – is, by giving the ball to one side or the other, and allowing it to keep that ball, so long as it can advance it and all that sort of business, we have built a more dramatic structure into it. So there is an ebb and flow in an American game that is quite different from the more rapid up and back of, say, soccer.”

So while religion finds its way into professional sports around the globe – as many soccer players cross themselves during a game – Oriard states American football has also become a stage where conflicts over cultural values are played out.

AS Facebook and Google jockey for dominance of the Web, the social networking titan’s $5 billion stock offering will give it a hefty warchest for the on-going fight, analysts say.

“It gives Facebook the capability to roll out more services,” Gartner technology analyst Michael Gartenberg said. “It’s going to be harder for companies to compete with Facebook.”

Facebook, in its filing for an initial public offering, cited Microsoft and Twitter as competitors but made it clear its chief rival is Google.

“We compete broadly with Google’s social networking offerings, including Google+,” Facebook stated of the social network launched by Google which has attracted 90 million users to Facebook’s more than 800 million.

“Some of our current and potential competitors have significantly greater resources and better competitive positions in certain markets than we do,” Facebook said.

At first glance, Google would appear to have the upper hand.

Google sites, which include the popular YouTube in addition to the eponymous search engine, attracted 1.09 billion unique visitors in December, according to on-line tracking firm comScore.

Facebook saw 794.3 million unique visitors in December.

But users spent more time on Facebook – a key metric for advertisers.

Visitors to Facebook spent an average of 377.3 minutes on the site in December compared to 207.2 minutes on Google sites.

Google, which launched six years before Facebook, is also flush with cash.

Facebook, opening its books for the first time in the filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, stated it had net income last year of $668 million and revenue of $3.7 billion.

Google posted a net profit of $2.71 billion last quarter alone on revenue of $10.58 billion.

But Facebook may have more upside.

“What Facebook’s management would like us to believe is that Facebook’s growth potential is much greater than Google’s,” stated Virginie Lazes of investment bank Bryan, Garnier & Co.

“Google is a cash machine but what more can they do in terms of growth?” Lazes asked. “Google’s growth is a maximum of around 15 percent a year.”

Facebook’s revenue meanwhile went from $777 million in 2009 to $1.97 billion in 2010 to last year’s $3.7 billion.

“That’s what the market will try to put a value on, this future growth potential,” Lazes said.

The battle between Facebook and Google comes down to a contest for eyeballs and on-line advertising dollars.

Google is the dominant player in on-line advertising with a 44.9 percent share of US on-line ad revenue last year to Facebook’s 6.4 percent, according to eMarketer.

Most of Google’s revenue comes from search advertising while Facebook is the top player in the rapidly growing display advertising space.

Facebook’s share of total US display advertising revenue was 16.3 percent last year to Google’s 12.3 percent and Yahoo!’s 12.5 percent, eMarketer said.

“What’s not to ‘like’ about the Facebook IPO?” asked Kathleen Smith of IPO investment adviser Renaissance Capital. “The social networking king is an advertiser’s dream, accessing the intimate social interactions of one in every 10 people in the world.”

Gartenberg stated that because Facebook has become such a dominant force in social networking it may be better positioned than Google in the long run.

Social networking is not a “passing fad,” he said. “It also seems to be pretty profitable.

“Facebook is the dominant player here and it’s become dominant in such a relatively short period of time,” he said. “To the point where we speak about companies like Google being the underdog.”

Google, however, “is not going to stand idly by and grant Facebook to become the center of gravity of the Web,” Gartenberg said.

“The only type of company that could mount a challenge to Facebook is a company of the size and scale and with the resources of a Google,” he said. “That makes for what could be a very interesting year going forward.”

Lou Kerner, social media analyst at secondshares.com, stated the struggle between Facebook and Google is “about how people discover the Web.”

“We’ve been used to periods of one king: it was Yahoo!, then it was Google,” Kerner said. “Now we are entering a period of two kings of the net.
