Ferrari 250 GT Spider and Mercedes-Benz Gullwing Among Highlights at Gooding Sale in Scottsdale

Just as motion picture studios often release their most tantalizing Oscar bait in the waning days before the nomination deadline, auction companies withhold some of their choicest consignments until close to the gavel date.

Gooding & Company of Santa Monica, Calif., announced this week the consignment of two vehicles intended to prey on the insecurities of high net worth collectors with predilections toward European sports vehicles of the 1950s. The vehicles will be featured at the house’s sale in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Jan. 20-21.

The first, a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Long Wheelbase California Spider with exposed headlights, is generally not as desirable as the racier, short-wheelbase covered-headlight model, but an LWB Spider is nothing to sneeze at. Among Gen X collectors, California Spiders may be coveted for the presence of a 1961 replica in the 1986 John Hughes film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”

Gooding has set a preauction estimate ranging from $3.4 million to $3.8 million for the Ferrari.

By contrast, the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing has no strikes, however superficial, against it. The model to appear in Scottsdale is one of only 29 of its kind — an alloy-bodied version of the SL gullwing-style coupe, widely regarded as Mercedes-Benz’s most charismatic production sports car.
