The New Jersey Devils may have found the break they need to help them stay alive in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Philadelphia Flyers forwards Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne will miss Game 5 of their NHL Eastern Conference quarter-final Thursday night at New Jersey because of injuries.

Each player appeared to injure his right foot blocking slapshots in Tuesday’s 4-1 victory, which gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Carter scored twice and added an assist in the first four games after leading Philadelphia with 33 goals in the regular season before fracturing his left foot.

The Flyers were awaiting results of a CT scan taken on Carter’s foot early Wednesday.

“It’s tough. It seems like I just got off crutches for the other foot,” Carter said. “It’s definitely disappointing. I really felt like I was getting back into my groove and get some jump in my game. Another setback like this, it’s tough.”

Gagne has two assists in the series.

Ville Leino will fill one forward spot, with American Hockey League call-ups David Laliberte, Andreas Nodl or Jon Kalinski also stepping in, stated Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren.

“Everybody deals with that in the playoffs,” Philadelphia head coach Peter Laviolette said. “You wish you had a healthy lineup, and you certainly wish they were in there. They are not, and you have to make adjustments.”
