The developers of TweetForger have shut down the cheeky website, saying it was only an April Fools’ Day prank.

“We’re now shutting down to shift focus to our next project,” stated a message on the site.

News.com.au yesterday reported on the site, which let you impersonate other people on Twitter.

The site came with several warnings, including:

“YOU and you alone are responsible for what you write on TweetForger.”

“THERE are things you can get in trouble for saying.”

“SOME people may not take kindly to having their names forged.”

It also came with a moral which was, basically — do not trust everything that you read on the internet.

“We hope we made you think a tiny bit about the types of information you see on-line every day,” states today’s farewell message.

All bogus tweets created with TweetForger prior to this day appear to have been taken down as well.

As well as shutting it down, the creators of the site named themselves as Alec Brownstein, Mat Bisher and Romanos Fessas.

In a post on his blog last week, Fessas spoke about his hopes, and fears, for the prank site.

“The idea came about when we were discussing the immense stock that people place in 140 characters,” it says.

“People use the medium to discuss their lunch, and yet the same platform starts revolutions and ends careers.

“Given the proliferation of clients, platforms and ways to interact with tweets, we were shocked that no one had yet used the platform to make a mockery of those who use it.

“We started it on a whim, and hopefully it doesn’t get too out of hand. We’re hoping to get some press and a bit of notoriety, but I’d settle for a clean getaway.”
