Reviewing the Subaru Impreza

December 9, 2011, 6:55 pm By THE NEW YORK TIMES

In Sunday’s Automobiles section, Christopher Jensen reviews the 2012 Subaru Impreza, which is available as a four-door sedan or a four-door hatchback.

The biggest strengths engineered into the new Impreza are unseen — indeed, the car’s exterior is not significantly changed from its indifferently designed predecessor — but they become immediately apparent at the pump. Subaru has squeezed a whopping 38 percent improvement in highway fuel economy over the outgoing model. And it did so while sharpening the car’s dynamic traits, as Mr. Jensen writes:

Once up to speed, the Impreza is a fine companion for the driver in a hurry. The electric power steering’s consistent weight and feel are quite good — indeed, far superior to the steering in other recently redesigned Subarus like the Outback.

And while the horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine has shed 22 horsepower over the outgoing model, which was rated at 170 horsepower, the Impreza has also lost 130 pounds, a amusing development that helps give it a nimble, if not outright sporty, feel.
