Sin is Canada’s 1st medallist at Pan-Am Games

Canada has its first medal of the 2011 Pan American Games.

Amanda Sin of Collingwood, Ont., completed third Saturday in the women’s mountain bike event at Guadalajara, Mexico.

“It’s really exciting to win the first medal of the Games, so I’m happy to do that for our country,” Sin said.

American Heather Irmiger captured the gold medal, finishing ahead of Mexican Laura Lorenza Morfin.

Mikaela Kofman of Toronto was fourth.

Canada completed third at the 2007 Games with 137 medals (39 gold, 43 silver, 55 bronze) behind the United States and Brazil.

Mountain biking was one of 11 medal events on the first official day of competition at the Games.

Three doping cases have emerged only hours before competition started at the Pan American Games on Saturday.

Brazilian runner Simone Alves da Silva and Puerto Rican mountain biker Kelvin Gonzalez both tested positive for EPO, while Chilean weightlifter Cristian Escalante tested positive for the stimulant methylhexaneamine.

The Brazilian athletics federation states it has suspended Silva and withdrawn her from the Pan American Games.

Gonzalez and Escalante were also withdrawn from the Games, according to their respective national Olympic committees.
