Gabrielle Giffords in book: ‘I will return’

Image Credit: Pete Souza/The White House/Getty Images When President George H.W. Bush came to visit her in the hospital, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords could state only “Wow!” and another word she had been uttering frequently at the time, “chicken.” Months later, when she was shown pics of famous people to see if she recognized faces, Giffords looked at Arnold Schwarzenegger and replied, more or less accurately: “Messin’ around.

Snooki’s book: Yes, we read it!

Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi took advantage of her Jersey Shore fame by publishing a novel earlier this year. Now, she’s back on the book shelves again with her follow-up, Confessions of a Guidette. It’s part memoir/part guide on, you know, how to be your very own guidette. For example: Your hair should make you six inches taller…. (How do you think I get on roller coasters? That, and wedges.)” And my personal favorite, a guidette must own hoop earrings. “And they ...

‘Shine’: National Book Award nom an error

In a truly humiliating snafu, the National Book Foundation admitted that it incorrectly named Shine, the controversial novel by popular young adult author Lauren Myracle, as a nominee in the Young People’s Literature category last week. The debacle began on Wednesday when the NBF accidentally listed Shine instead of Chime by Franny Billingsley as a nominee. Initially, the list of nominees grew to six to include both Shine and Chime, but on Friday, Myracle was asked to officially withdraw from ...

‘Game of Thrones’: Novel spoilers uproar

It’s every fan’s nightmare: You wait six years for a book, and then a couple weeks before it finally hits bookstores, the spoilers begin popping up on fansites. As Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin wrote on his personal not-a-blog blog, “Amazon Germany screwed up huge time and started shipping A Dance with Dragons before they were supposed to. I am told that about 180 duplicates got out before they were made aware of their mistake and shut ...

Harry Potter: Revisiting the books

As a book review editor, I’m always reading ahead: manuscripts, galleys. That fat beach read you’re devouring now? I sat down with it in January or February. I’m well into fall 2011 now. That’s just the nature of the job. But every summer, when  I go away for a couple of weeks, I try to take a break and reread something I loved, something that, at some point in my life, meant a lot to me: John Updike’s Rabbit books. Armistead ...
