Circus Museums Pay Tribute to ‘Greatest Show on Earth’

“Ladies and gentlemen, and kids of all ages!” That’s a favorite ringmaster’s refrain at the circus, a cherished entertainment tradition across America. And it’s lovingly preserved at two uncommon U.S. museums. It was not a ringmaster’s whistle that heralded “Circus Day” in every decent-sized town in America for several decades on each side of the turn of the 20th Century.  It was the synchronized clopping of draft horses, mingled with the rousing tunes of a brass band atop a four-ton ...

‘Glee’ with Ricky Martin: Your take?

We’ll give her some credit — Gwyneth showed off serious Spanish skills when she filled in for Mr. Schuester last season (even if they were used to dish on Lindsay Lohan). But just wait until tonight, when things will heat up as Ricky Martin guest stars as a night school instructor who gives Will some pointers. (Helps to be a native speaker!) Along the way, Martin (as David Martinez), does a hot number with Santana, and the rest of the cast also ...

Controversy Surrounds Muslim-American Reality TV Show

A new controversy over Islam has arisen in the United States, this time over a reality TV show that profiles Muslim Americans and a home improvement chain’s decision to pull its advertising from the show. The company, Lowe’s, decided to end its ties to the program after a conservative Christian group labelled the show “propaganda” that hides the “danger” of the Islamic agenda. It’s a scene from All-American Muslim… “I have no concerns about travelling around the anniversary of 9/11,” ...

Saints’ Brees to visit Sesame Street

Move over, Grover! One of the NFL’s top quarterbacks is heading to “Sesame Street.” Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints is making a special appearance on Thursday’s episode of the educational children’s TV show. He visited the set a few months ago to record the segment, which co-stars the street’s furry red resident, Elmo. Brees, who has two young sons, Baylen and Bowen, taped the segment before the begin of this year’s regular football season. Brees leads the NFL ...

Bentley’s New V-8 Will Growl With a German Accent

Bentley Motors announced Monday that it would introduce a 500-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 engine for its Continental GT coupe and GTC convertible models at the Detroit auto show in January. Both automobiles will retain the W-12 engine as a higher-priced option. The company’s new 4-liter V-8 may be out-muscled by its 6-liter W-12, which generates 631 horsepower at its top end, but the V-8 is a more advanced package. The new engine features technologies found in the most contemporary power plants, ...

Dodge Dart: A Familiar Name Returns From an Unlikely Place

In January, the Chrysler Group will sneak an Alfa dressed like a Dodge into the Detroit auto show. Chrysler announced Tuesday that it would bring back the Dart nameplate for Dodge’s first compact sedan since the Neon was phased out in 2005. And judging by the Dart’s Italian pedigree, it will not be the plain vanilla scoop of the ’60s that its namesake was — even in Swinger guise — nor will it be a Hemi-powered limited-edition monster like the ...

November 29, 2011, 7:48 pm By JONATHAN SCHULTZ Leading up to their formal debuts at the Tokyo auto show, two long-gestating rear-wheel-drive coupes co-developed by Toyota and Subaru have been previewed in production form. The Toyota FT-86 concept, first shown at the 2009 Tokyo auto show and considered a spiritual successor to the Celica, is rebadged for the European market as the GT 86 and as simply the 86 for Japan. The version of the coupe destined for North America ...

‘SNL’: How’d Charlie Day do?

Who’s the wild card now, Charlie?! Returning from a three-week hiatus, Saturday Night Live is all new tonight with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day as host and Maroon 5 (and their reluctantly shirtless lead singer Adam Levine) as musical guests. Day’s first go as an SNL host couldn’t be coming at a better time, really. Before the break, the back-to-back Ben Stiller and Anna Faris episodes felt lackluster at ideal (Melissa McCarthy set the bar painstakingly high), ...

Teen Bride Courtney Stodden Reinstated on Facebook

The Facebook page of aspiring reality TV personality Courtney Stodden has been reinstated after being pulled earlier this week for “inappropriate sexual content.” Both the personal page and fan page of the 17-year-old wife of Lost actor Doug Hutchison were yanked off the social networking site Thursday. The pages reappeared on-line Friday with the message from Facebook, “This page was removed in error and has been restored. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.” Stodden’s mother, Krista Keller, blamed ...

With HX1, Peugeot Adds a Plug-In to Its Diesel-Hybrid Program

August 29, 2011, 3:16 pm By STEPHEN WILLIAMS Sleek and sensuous, the Peugeot HX1 concept, which is expected to have its debut at the Frankfurt auto show next month, is a six-seat, plug-in diesel hybrid that attempts to meld design elements of sedan and wagon. It follows the 508 RXH, the brand’s first mass-produced diesel hybrid, which is expected to go on sale in Europe next spring. Its lithium-ion batteries would provide just under 19 miles of purely electric driving ...
