Three-quarters of Australian homes have broadband

New data shows around three in every four households in Australia have access to broadband internet.

The data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows in 2010 and 2011, 6.2 million households had broadband internet, and means 73 per cent of all Australian households have broadband access.

The ACT had the highest proportion of broadband access with 83 per cent of households connected, while Tasmania had the lowest share with 65 per cent.

Social networking was one of the more popular activities on the internet.

The younger age groups led the way with 88 per cent of 15 to 17 year olds using the world wide web for social networking, while 86 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds used this activity.

More than two-thirds of world wide web users (68 per cent) purchased goods or services over the world wide web in 2010/11.

The most popular goods or services purchased were travel, accommodation, membership or tickets, compact discs, music, DVDs, videos, books or magazines.
